Kay Linaker was educated at a private school in Connecticut and later attended New York University. While living in New York, she became interested in the stage and began attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Her work in several small Broadway roles brought her to the attention of screen scouts and she was signed for movie work. She appeared in many films of the 1930s and '40s (including a quintet of Charlie Chans and James Whale's final two films) before meeting and marrying singer-turned-writer Howard Phillips. She relocated to the East and, now calling herself Kate Phillips, began writing for television (her husband became an NBC-TV executive). In more recent years, Phillips taught at universities in Canada and New Hampshire.- Peggy Shannon was born Winona Sammon on January 10, 1907, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She attended Catholic school where she became friends with child actress Madge Evans. While visiting her aunt in New York sixteen year old Peggy was discovered by producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.. He hired her as a chorus girl in The Ziegfeld Follies. Peggy married actor Alan Davis in 1926. The following year she was starring on Broadway in Earl Carrol's production of What Anne Brought Home. In 1931 she was offered a contract at Paramount studios. With her beautiful face and red hair Peggy was promoted as "the new Clara Bow". When Clara suffered a nervous breakdown Peggy was given her role in The Secret Call (1931). Although she starred in the films This Reckless Age (1932) and Hotel Continental (1932), her career never really took off. She also developed a reputation for being difficult to work with. After her movie contract was not renewed she tried returning to Broadway. Unfortunately by this time she had serious drinking problem and was fired from the play The Light Behind The Shadow. Peggy continued to get small parts in B-movies like Youth on Parole (1937) and Cafe Hostess (1940). She divorced Alan in 1940 and married camera man Al Roberts. On May 11, 1941 her husband returned home from a trip and found Peggy slumped over the kitchen table. She had died from a heart attack at the young age of thirty-four. Her autopsy revealed that she had a serious liver ailment caused by her alcoholism. Three weeks after her death Albert committed suicide. Peggy is buried at Hollywood Forever cemetery in Hollywood, California. The epitaph on her tombstone says "That Red Headed Girl, Peggy Shannon".
- A forgotten starlet of 1930s B-movies was Lillian Elizabeth Guenther, a pretty, hazel-eyed blonde of German ancestry. Her family moved from Arkansas to California when she was a child. In the early 20s, she had bit parts in a couple of silent pictures. During her subsequent hiatus from film work, Janet completed her education at the Orton School for Girls in Pasadena, then spent five years as a theatrical dancer. She also had a lucrative sideline as a model in southern California, often employed by exclusive fashion houses. In 1932, she was selected as a junior hostess representing Arkansas at the Los Angeles Olympics. The following year, she was signed by Fox and starred in only her second film for the studio opposite George O'Brien in The Golden West (1932). Unfortunately, her next venture turned out to be a box-office bomb and Janet was dropped by the studio. Though she stayed on the Hollywood periphery as a lead actress for another three years, she was already condemned to bottom-of-the-bill sage brush operas and melodramas for Poverty Row outfits like Weiss Brothers, Peerless and Reliable. Sometime in 1935 -- presumably on the set of Rough Riding Ranger (1935) -- she had an accident which prompted her to retire from acting. That same year, she married a New York investment broker, became Lillian Barrett and, for all intents and purposes, left show business behind.

- Helen Seamon was born in Dermott, Ark, and brought up in Pine Bluff. Her father was a ticket railroad agent. She made a theatrical debut of sorts in a movie house in Pine Bluff; During children's matinees Helen sat on the organ console and sang. She also studied dancing. Her parents scraped up some money and sent her to Los Angeles for further training with Ernest Belcher. One day she accompanied a friend to a studio and sat in the waiting room, while the friend talked to the casting director. Another executive raced into the waiting room, waved Helen into his office and said he had to have a girl in a dance number. He had telephoned Belcher and the teacher had told him that Miss Seamon was in the studio.

- Robert Latimer Buckner was born along the banks of the Arkansas River at Pine Bluff on 16 March, 1903, to Walter D. and May Latimer Buckner. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where his father served as dean of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral.
After graduating from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, Buckner attended acting classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Later he toured with the repertoire companies of Jane Cowl and Grace George before making his Broadway debut in the late 1920s.
In 1930 his play, "An Affair of State" failed at the box office, but the following year, "Portrait of a Lady", faired much better, as did several other plays he wrote during the 30s. His biggest success came in 1939 with "The Primrose Path" which was written with Walter Hart and was produced by George Abbott.
In 1939 Buckner sued Paramount Pictures and his former writing partner Charles Beahan over the release of the film Midnight (1934). Buckner claimed that Paramount got the idea for the film from a play entitled, "Dearly Beloved," that he and Beahan had written and later submitted to Paramount for their consideration. Buckner named Beahan in the action because he refused to join him as a plaintiff.
When the World War broke out Buckner joined the US Navy and served with the Seabees in the Pacific Theater. After the war he wrote scripts for a number of films and television shows.
On occasion the press would confuse Robert L. Buckner's name with that of Robert Buckner, a Hollywood screenwriter who was his contemporary.
Robert Latimer Buckner passed away on 24 January, 1961, at Veterans Hospital in New York after a lengthy illness. He was survived by his wife, Mary Jean Buckner, a son and two daughters. He is interned at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. - Richard Flournoy was born on 11 March 1901 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, USA. - Donald Montgomery Hutson was the first star wide receiver in NFL history. He is credited with creating many of the modern pass routes used in the NFL today. He is credited as the first to use the buttonhook, z-out, hook and go and countless other routes that have become staples of offensive football. Along with Jerry Rice, he is widely considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history.
The All American played at University of Alabama with teammate Paul "Bear" Bryant at the other end position. The Crimson Tide team won the Rose Bowl in 1935 beating Stanford 29-13 with Hutson catching 6 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
He joined the Green Bay Packers in 1935. Legendary coach Curley Lambeau wanted to isolate Hudson away from the defense by splitting him out away from the formation. Hense, the term "split end".
His first season Hutson scored his very first touchdown on an eighty-three yard pass from Arnie Herber. Many historians refer to this as, "the play that forever changed the game." In his eleven subsequent seasons, Hutson captured 18 major NFL receiving records. He had 488 receptions, by far the most productive of his era, and one of the most productive of all time. Don also led the league in scoring 5 consecutive and 8 seasons overall.
When he retired in 1945, he had 99 receiving touchdowns, a record that would stand for 44 years when Seahawk Steve Largent caught his 100th and last NFL TD.
As did almost all players in his day, Hutson played both offense and defense. On defense, Hutson was a very good safety who intercepted 30 passes over the final 6 years of his career. Hutson's highest season total was in 1943, when Hutson intercepted 8 passes in only 10 games. For many of his 11 seasons, Hutson was also the kicker for the Packers. He added 172 extra points and 7 field goals for another league record, 881 points.
In 1999, he was ranked number 6 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players, the highest-ranking Packer and the highest-ranking pre-World War II player.
